How to make an autumn door wreath: brighten up your door this fall in four easy steps

Want to add a splash of seasonal colour to your front door this autumn? A fall door wreath is an easy DIY project you can turn your hand to one evening, plus having a stylish centrepiece that you've made yourself hanging on your front door is guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you come home. 

There are no real rules when it comes to making a seasonal wreath like this. You can go for real foliage you've gathered from your garden, faux flowers and leaves, or a mix of the two to create the desired colour and effect – basically anything goes!

You will need:

• Artificial stems or dried cuttings, foliage, leaves, flowers
• Acorns (optional) 
• Round wicker base or similar – the design pictured uses a round natural wreath from Dobbies
• Wire or string 
• Cutting tools, such as florist scissors

Step one: choose your foliage

Think about the sort of foliage that you'd like to include on your wreath. You could go for a mix of real and faux foliage to get the best of both worlds. Use foraged finds such as leaves from your garden, small fallen branches or snip a few stems of autumn berries from your garden plants. You will need some larger stems for your base layer then more delicate stems for your top layer. 

Step two: start creating your base layer

For a truly autumnal feel to your fall wreath, use a rustic wicker design for your wreath. To start, arrange your base layer of flower and foliage, balancing out the colour and texture. Secure the base layer to your wreath using floristry wire, arranging the foliage in such a way that it covers the wire and keeps it hidden from sight. 

Step three: add decorative flowers and foliage

Create small groupings or posies of flowers with the more detailed and delicate foliage, which will bring in added colour and interest to your design. Attach your posies on top of the base layer foliage using floristry wire. Once firmly in place, snip off the ends of the wire for a neat finish. 

Step four: display your finished design

Hang your finished wreath from the front door for a seasonal display. As stylist Rebecca Stanton advises, when the time comes to give it a festive makeover, rather than starting from scratch you could simply layer up your wreath, adding a delicate set of fairy lights and a hand tied ribbon for a twinkling display.
