Is there anything that sums up an autumn afternoon more than sitting down to a Sunday lunch and tucking into a delicious apple crumble for dessert? We thought not. Packed with flavour and a firm favourite with kids and adults alike, it's a perfect way to make use of your homegrown apple crops.

If carefully harvested at the right time and stored in a cool place, your apples will keep for several months. But what about the ones that, despite your best efforts, you dropped and bruised when you placed them in your basket, or windfall apples you didn't quite pick in time? Using them up in a tasty apple crumble means they won't go to waste.

This recipe will serve eight and takes 1 hour 10 minutes to make. Serve with a side of warm custard (or cream if that's more to your taste) and you're onto a winner.
